Rebtel drops the rates to Cuba yet again: 64.9c/min or 0,499€/min

Swedish VoIP Telecom Company Rebtel announced a new rate cut for calls to Cuba last week. Since 2011, the company has made a number of rate drops, going from more than 1$/min to 64.9c/min. During this time, more and more Cubans have joined Rebtel.

We talk today with Rebtel’s Pricing Manager, Mikael Rosengren, to understand how this online company became a leader of the market in a few more than one year:

Q: Why are calls to Cuba so expensive?

A: - Traditionally, the Cuban government has a high tax on incoming calls as a way to generate tax income from exiled Cubans. I would estimate that the price would be 15c/minute a non-regulated market like neighboring countries.

Q: There is a clear trend among Cubans to move into VoIP technology services, and there is a fierce competition in this segment. How did Rebtel manage to be a market leader?

A: - Because of the high cost of calling Cuba, callers are more cost sensitive than to other countries. This unfortunately opens up for less serious, bad quality operators. We aim for a long-term relationship with our customers and our most passionate marketers are the customers themselves. We don’t want to seem like the best, we want to be the best.

Q: But there are other companies in the market offering lower prices…

A: - If providers offer rates that are suspiciously low, they can do that in two ways: Either have fine print conditions so that the customer ends up paying more than they think, or through buying so-called ‘grey routes’ with very unreliable voice quality

Q: In short, could you explain how this new rate model works?

A: - It is quite simple: You make a 50$ deposit once and it enables you to call for a lower price until June, when we hope to launch an even nicer offer. No codes, no additional requirements. Make a 50$ payment and you call for cheap until June 1st. To be able to pay 50$ you need to be a Rebtel customer for more than 1 month.

Q: Why did Rebtel decide to offer this special rate to Cubans?

A: - Due to new lower taxes, we had the chance to lower the rates from our side. We felt that we wanted to reward our most loyal and heavy frequent callers since they are those who suffer most due to high rates to Cuba.

Q: What has been the reaction among Rebtel users calling to Cuba with this new rate?

A: - Very positive, 4 times more people are making large deposits than previously which has given them the lower rates and this just since last week!

Q: Some new users could be also interested on this new rate for premium users. Will they be able to access this promotion?

A: - As stated, this new rate is intended to benefit the existing users that have been a long time with us. However, this new price list is activated after the user makes a USD 50 payment, and that can only be done 30 days after the first deposit a user makes on Rebtel.com. In the meantime they will have access to the normal Rebtel rates, one of the lowest in the market.

Everything you need to know about the cost of calling Africa from the UK

In the past, keeping in touch with a loved one in Africa from the United Kingdom was relatively simple. You had no other option but to either write a letter and wait weeks for any response, or pay the expensive prices to make a call to them, if they were fortunate enough to have a telephone.

Of course, over the past thirty years, this has changed markedly. Nowadays, there are a myriad of different ways to keep in touch with loved ones, from landlines in homes, mobile phones, prepaid SIM cards and a range of VOIP services:

Calling Africa from a landline

Calling Africa with mobile operators & international plans

Calling Africa with international prepaid SIM cards

Calling Africa with VOIP services

So if you are someone who needs to keep in touch with someone back in Africa, and in particular if you need to call someone in Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Cameroon or Nigeria, then what is the best, cheapest and most reliable way for you to do this?

It is not easy to find a simple answer. Let's find out!

Calling Africa from a landline

Outlined on the graph below is a simple, at-a-glance reference guide which will show you how calling each of the five African countries from the UK, for one hour, using a landline service compares, as of 1st November 2012. All prices shown are for one hour (60 minutes) talk time.

Calling Africa with mobile operators

It is evident here that there is a huge discrepancy between prices available with some services costing almost 50 times more than others for an hour of chat. Is that huge difference also seen in mobile-to-mobile telephone services? Let’s take a look at some of the most popular mobile service providers in the UK compared to Rebtel and find out!

It is worth noting here that to get the cheaper services at the prices stated, you do need to commit to the price plan shown next to each international calling plan every month in addition to what you would pay for the calls.

These international plans are subscribed to by the phone user and each of the companies listed above offers a similar product, which means for a flat monthly fee, the user receives a certain number of minutes to call internationally at a lower rate (the prices listed).

T-Mobile’s World Class option is free, but offers little in the way of benefits to the user calling four of the five African countries listed, whereas the other international call plans Vodafone International (£5 per month), O2 International Calling Card (£5 per month) and Orange Call Abroad Subscription (£3.50 per month) do come with an up front cost, but offer substantial savings compared to dialling direct as part of your normal pay monthly or pay as you go contract.

Calling Africa with international SIM cards

So, it is clear that there is a much cheaper option to using your traditional landline or mobile provider, even with their additional international call plans in place, if you are going to call any of these African countries. But how do the prices compare with the companies offering cheap prepaid SIM cards?

Once again, when considering the cost of mobile-to-mobile calls and the ever-popular sending of text messages via SMS, there is one company which is the clear winner in terms of giving customers superb all round value.

Calling Africa with VOIP services

Finally, there are ways we can now communicate over the Internet using our personal computers, smartphones and tablet PC’s and save more money. Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) has grown markedly in the past few years and many companies have sprung up to take advantage of this flexible and cheap form of communication.

The best aspect of VOIP is that if two users are connected to the Internet via free WiFi and both have accounts with the same VOIP provider, such as Rebtel or Skype, then calls and even video calls between the two are completely free regardless of where they are in the world.

However, there are times when users may wish to use VOIP services to contact other people who are not on the same provider and this does incur a cost. So how do these costs compare? Let’s find out!

As you can see, once again, there is clearly a much cheaper option for paying for calls internationally using VoIP and once again, Rebtel’s price structure is impossible to beat.

Conclusion

What is clearly evident from examining all the tables together in one document is that it is markedly cheaper nowadays to keep in touch with a loved one in Africa from the UK than ever before.

Pre-pay SIM cards and even the mobile phone add-ons have helped reduce costs considerably, especially when compared to dialling directly through traditional phone lines. Yet, what is also apparent is that a provider like Rebtel not only offers many of the cheapest ways to communicate to Africa, but also one of the most convenient. There’s no need to carry around a pre-paid sim phone just for African calls, there’s no need to pay a monthly fee to your mobile provider.

The good news is for the consumer is that whatever method you choose to stay in touch, it should now no longer be anywhere near as expensive as it used to be to stay in touch with friends or family in Africa!

Twice the phones, twice the hassle!

Did you know that 81% of Nigerians in the UK carry a second phone?

We recently did some research and we're shocked that so many people pick up a second SIM just to save pennies on their international calls. Check it out!

So, 81% of people calling Nigeria from the UK are using an unnecessary second phone. That means there are up to 154,000 extra phones with pre-paid SIMs, just to call Nigeria. On average, a Nigerian in the UK calls home for 40 hours every year. With a pre-paid SIM, they're spending £192 annually, which means that their calls end up being 44% more expensive than with Rebtel. These 2nd phone users think they're saving on cheap calls to Nigeria, when really they're only wasting time and money!

With Rebtel, you’ll never need to carry two phones. You can call and text to the UK, Nigeria, or anywhere in the world, all from your favourite Smartphone. No excess luggage required.
