How to send ToIP SMS with Rebtel!

If you are looking at the title of this article and feel a sense of dread rising at the potential for highly technical terms, then do not panic! All will become very clear!

What is ToIP?

ToIP is an acronym that stands for Text over Internet Protocol. In the same way that using your Internet connection allows you to make a phone call to another person, for example with Skype, using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), ToIP is a way in which Rebtel utilise the power and adaptability of the internet to send text messages to a contact.

How does ToIP work?

Without getting overly technical, ToIP and VoIP both work in the same way. The fact that Internet connections can handle masses of data, but at the moment the data sent hardly stretches this capacity, means that it is possible to ‘add on’ a little extra to the usual data being sent over the Internet. This little extra can come in the form of your Voice, or a Text message. Your Rebtel software converts your voice or text, attaches it to a message, sends it down the internet where it is unscrambled by the receiving device.

How can I start using ToIP?

Starting to use Rebtel’s ToIP service could not be simpler and setting up your account is completed in much the same way as setting up a Rebtel account for international calls. Simply register your details and enter your mobile number and the number of a person you would like to keep in touch with.

Once you have completed this Rebtel will generate a local number that allows you to keep in touch using their high quality service. You can both save this number to your contacts list.

When you wish to send an international ToIP SMS with Rebtel, simply click on the contact, select SMS and enter your message, and click send, as you would for any normal text message!

By using the Rebtel ToIP service you can save over 50% on the regular international SMS costs applied by many other providers!

What do I pay for?

When you send a ToIP SMS, you only pay for the cost of a local text message, and the same is true for your friend should they deem to reply to you via text also (and provided they are registered with the Rebtel service).

Because Rebtel have used the power of the internet to send your message, there is no charge for the international part of the call. Best of all, if your current mobile contract provides you with a set amount of free texts each month, Rebtel will use these texts firsts before charging you for any texts you make!

So, if you use ToIP SMS to send messages, you may well find that if you are able to send limitless text messages for free with your network provider, you may well get your text messages for free too!
