The Lost Christmas

Let us take you back to an incredible but little known period in Cuban history...Read on!

The year is 1969 and Fidel Castro decides to ban Christmas in Cuba. The reform is aimed at keeping the workforce focused on the sugarcane harvest - but also a statement to show that Cuba is a secular nation.

Under pressure from the Pope, President Castro agrees to make Christmas a permanent public holiday. Cubans, most of whom are Catholic, rush out to buy Christmas trees, decorations and religious icons - all of which sell out in record time.

Using Rebtel's own high quality lines, we called some people that experienced life without Christmas in Cuba. The stories are fascinating, funny and touching, just like a good phone call should be.
