Rebtel is looking for a Backend Engineering Manager

About the Rebtel Backend

The Rebtel Backend is the heart of our business. All of our products in the calling, mobile topup, gift cards and money transfer areas are resident in our cloud-based backend environment. The Backend engineering team is responsible for building and maintaining our current product offering and integrating with 3rd party providers on whom we depend. 

Work within the Backend team is well structured without being stifling. We use an agile workflow to handle day to day tasks. We also practice code reviews and dialog as an excellent way to spread knowledge and to keep code quality high. You will find tasks that are demanding and that will trigger your creativity.

In an environment as complex as Rebtel, refactoring is important to keep the code base clean. A healthy portion of time is dedicated to this. We currently build on a modern stack (.Net Core, Kubernetes, AzureSQL), but hey, we’ve been around since 2006 and we have some systems running on legacy Microsoft technologies. 

The Backend engineering team is up to date with development best practices and software patterns. We have frequent communication within the team to ensure that our approaches and tools are relevant to the ever evolving technology scene.

About you and your responsibilities

  • Provide leadership of the Backend team on a daily basis
  • Align the backend strategy with the interim and long-term visions of Rebtel
  • Interface with the product team to translate product needs into deliverables from the Backend team
  • Help us to retain, develop and attract top engineering talent
  • You have keen interest in architecture: how to build complex applications that are maintainable.
  • As an engineering manager your role will include having an overview of architectural decisions. You will discuss technical solutions with the rest of the team and act as an inspiration to keep the code base clean.
  • You are interested in problem solving and enjoy finding the simplest possible solution to complex problems.


  • Experience building and leading software development teams 
  • Sound knowledge in Agile development methodologies
  • Experience with Development lifecycle tools and processes (Git/Gitlab, Jira, Teamcity)
  • Knowledgeable about modern concepts in distributed, high-volume transaction systems.
  • Experience running in containerized and cloud environments. 
  • Excellent communication skills in English

Bonus points

  • Experience with .Net Core, GRPC, RabbitMQ, MSSQL, Kubernetes
  • Experience working with large teams on mature products with many users
  • Experience building new products with an eye on maintainability and scalability
  • A degree in computer science or equivalent
  • Experience working with audio, video, telecommunications and/or messaging protocols (SIP, WebRTC)
  • Experience with payment platforms, FinTech or money transfer

Ideal candidate

  • 5+ years full-time professional experience (i.e., 10k+ hours)
  • Great communication and interpersonal skills
  • Continuously raise the level of the backend technology ecosystem
  • Happy hacking on new technology, loves R&D
  • Ability to adapt and respond to rapidly evolving product needs 
  • Vision for product development and for how a code base evolves
  • Strong leadership, but also collaborative and empathetic towards teammates.
