Traveling Guide
How to Use Rebtel When Traveling
Rebtel is designed for travelers who want to stay connected without surprises. Whether you’re visiting family or exploring a new country, you can still make calls with your Rebtel app.
However, if you call using phone lines, mobile data, or Shared Local Numbers, your mobile operator may charge roaming fees. To avoid these charges, follow one of the travel-friendly options below.
Option 1: Use Travel Mode (Wi-Fi Only)
The safest way to call while traveling is to turn on Travel Mode in the Rebtel app. This feature ensures your calls connect only via Wi-Fi, so you won’t get charged by your mobile operator.
Activate Travel Mode from the call setup settings.
Make sure your contacts are saved in international format, including numbers from your home country.
Option 2: Buy a Local SIM and Add It to Your Rebtel Account
If you’re staying abroad for a longer time, consider getting a local SIM card and adding the number to your Rebtel account.
This lets you make calls using local rates or local mobile data.
Save your contacts in international format for best results.
Make sure your host country is supported by Rebtel before using this method.
To learn how to add a number, search “Add a number to Rebtel account” in our Help Center.
Option 3: Use Shared Local Numbers While Abroad
Yes, you can still use Shared Local Numbers when traveling, but it’s more complicated.
These numbers are assigned based on your primary phone number’s country.
To use them abroad, buy a local SIM and update your Rebtel account.
Rebtel will then assign new local numbers for your contacts in the host country.
Important Note:
If you change Shared Local Numbers to match a new country, your existing numbers will be replaced. When you return home, your contacts might not be assigned the same local numbers as before.
Can I use mobile data instead of Wi-Fi in Travel Mode?
No. When Travel Mode is turned on, Rebtel will only allow calls over Wi-Fi, even if you have free or paid mobile data. This helps avoid roaming charges.
If you turn Travel Mode off, Rebtel may use your mobile data or phone line, depending on your call setup and location.
Can I use the phone line option when roaming in Europe?
If you're from Europe and traveling within Europe, roaming may be included in your mobile plan. In this case, you can turn off Travel Mode and use your phone line, but it's still recommended to keep Travel Mode on to avoid unexpected charges.
Rebtel will usually prompt you to activate Travel Mode when it detects that you're in a different country.
Calling While Traveling – Do I Need a Long-Distance Card?
No long-distance card needed with Rebtel
When you travel abroad, Rebtel lets you keep calling internationally without the need to buy a traditional long-distance card.
Here's how it works:
Use your original number: Even in another country, you can keep using your home country number with Rebtel.
Buy the right plan: Purchase credits or a subscription for the country you’ll be calling while abroad.
Activate Travel Mode: This helps avoid roaming charges and ensures better connectivity.
Want more flexibility?
You can also:
Buy a local SIM card in the country you’re visiting
Add it to your Rebtel account to access more calling options (via mobile data or phone lines)
Remember: No matter which SIM or plan you use, always make sure to buy credits or a subscription for the country you want to call.
