How can I use Rebtel when traveling?

Our app was created with the world traveler in mind. When you leave your country of residence, be it to visit family or see something new, you can use your Rebtel app to call. Keep in mind, though, that if you’re calling using phone lines, data, access number or shared local numbers your operator will very likely charge you roaming fees.

To keep from getting charged unexpected roaming fees choose one of the following options for your calls when you’re travelling.

How to call with Rebtel when Traveling

Travel Mode call setup in the app - Call with Wi-Fi only

Wi-Fi is everywhere! Turn on travel mode in call setup and call whenever you have Wi-Fi available. This is the safest option, because it will never let you connect a call with anything except Wi-Fi.

Make sure that you saved all your contacts in international format, including the numbers from your country of residence!

Buy a local SIM card and add the new number to your Rebtel account

You can purchase a local SIM card and add that number to your Rebtel account. That way you can call normally, making local calls or data calls with your new local operator.

Make sure that you saved all your contacts in international format, including the numbers from your country of residence!

Make sure your host country is a Rebtel country before committing to this option!

Use a local access number

You can call using your Rebtel account from any landline, payphone or your friend’s cell phone using access numbers.

Make sure this is an option in your host country. Check if your host country is a Rebtel country and what the access number is here.

Can I call with shared local numbers when I’m traveling?

You can call with your shared local numbers when you’re traveling, but it’s not the simplest solution. Your shared local numbers are assigned based on the country of your primary number, so you’d need a local phone number to use shared local numbers.

If you buy a local SIM card and add it to your Rebtel account you can change all your saved shared local numbers to your host country.

WARNING! This will rewrite all your shared local numbers and when you go back home and move them back to your country of residence they might not get assigned to your contacts in the same order that they were assigned before.

If this doesn’t bother you, this is a viable option for you.

Here’s how you can add a new number to your Rebtel account.

Remember to purchase a subscription or world credits so you can call your country of residence!
